MS Saga (aka Gundam RPG)

I thought I'd share some info on MS Saga: A New Dawn, a new gundam rpg on the PS2.

I went in with low expectations to be honest.  I seen a few screenshots and new that graphicaly it was not going to be impressive and overall it was built as your standard run of the mill Turn Based RPG.  However, as of now, im hopelessly addicted!

You have to take the good with the bad on this one.  The amusing, and the plan old sad.

Good:  Customization!  Its like Leggo Gundam.  Mix up arms, legs, torsos, build your own style of mech.  Melee build, Range, tank type etc.  You also get to choose the colors of all these parts as well.  Different mechs also have different layouts for weapon sets up.  Usualy your Range type gundams will have less room for bigger melee weapons and more for your longer ranged weapons.  Of course as you progress in the game you get gundams that can hold larger and more powerful weapons and armor.
You also pay to have the stats on your mech upgraded. HP, Atk, and Speed.

Bad:  Level progression.  Some points you find your self just hitting the button over and over again to speed through cheesy areas to get to the main plot area.  Then you get there...and the boss beats the everloving crap out of you and you find yourself "grinding" a few levels just to get some new skils and cash to upgrade your mechs.  Boss battles are not for the feint of heart.  In fact some of them so far have given me flashbacks to Ultimate Weapons in FF7.  Unfortunaly you will find yourself wasting alot of time just trying to get attack patterns down and by the 3rd time or so you will actualy be able to have a decent run at it.

Good and Bad:  Character Design.  By far the most anime/cosplay group of game characters I've ever seen.  There is everything from a Jamacian guy to a full out Pigtailed Goth chick in this game.  One gal named Trimmie is wearing a very cool outfit, revealing as well. I was sold on this untill I seen the back side....lol she is showing some impressive butt cleave! *shakes head*

Good:  Storyline.  Although it really doesnt follow any timeline of the Gundam universe, on its own it progresses quite nicely.  Nothing earth shattering here and some run of the mill typical rpg plots, but does keep you interested and does very well leading you to new areas and you are never in the dark.

Bad:  Graphics/Design.  The first thing you notice, and imo the biggest dissapointment, is Chibbi Gundams.  I mean how hard would of it been to make the head a little smaller and make longer legs?  Most of the areas are very large/tall as well so size restraint doesnt seem to be an issue.

Although the graphics are not the worst i've seen out of some "modern" games on the PS2,they are by no means near what is capable.  The intro movie leads to the let down imo.  It's done in a very intersting and decent cel shading...something that the actual game could of easily been done in.  Yet it was not frown

Overall I give it about an 8/10.  Higher than some other reviews which put it around 7/10  The main reason is how much fun I have customizing those darn gundams!

PS: I know I use the word "Mech" alot...deal with it!  Mobile Suit, there I said it! grin

Re: MS Saga (aka Gundam RPG)

I doubt I'm going to pick this one up, but it doesn't sound bad.
I do have other things higher on my list, though, like Metroid Prime: Hunters
and New Super Mario Bros. (yea, both DS).

Looks good, but it's rare that I'll buy and play a game.

One day *sigh*
