Why would forums cost money sidefrown.  That to me just sounds dumb....kind of like a sorority or a frat sidefrown

Re: Free Boards

The software costs money, just like this forum, in fact vBulletin is prolly most expencive forum out there but I can see why.

Re: Free Boards

Having made heavy use of both SMF and phpBB, I can HIGHLY recommend SMF - they're wickedly stable, highly secure, built on fully modern code, and make adding plugins and themes practically painless*.  In addition, it comes with built in, easy capability for implanting info into other sites, be they PHP or standard (x)html through the use of SSI and php includes.

That's not to say there's no downsides - it's still a fairly new board system, and because of that themes and mods aren't nearly as plentiful as with, say, phpBB.  They also require a little bit of a learning curve to get full ease of use out of them.  Also, while the user community is great, they can be a little elitist, especially if you're not careful to search for questions already answered - though that's true of a lot of forums.

Incidentally, the RC2 candidate is every bit as stable as the 'stable' version, and a great choice for a new board.

*With the default theme.  Without, you have to do some hand-editing for some plugins.

Re: Free Boards

SMF is basically the best when it comes to free forum software

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins,
an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found.
