Free Visual Novels

I know that some members play Japanese Visual Novels.  However, for the most part the ones they play are commercial ones that are usually, but not always, adult oriented.  Since I never hear anyone talk about the free ones, I figured I would point out a few that I thought were good.

Red Shift - I played this maybe six months ago.  Unlike the others I have played so far, I don't recall this visual novel having any decision tree at all in it.  You click your say through the story enjoying the graphics.  OTOH, I enjoyed the story a lot and even at the end felt that the ending could be interpreted either way.  (Available for Windows, Linux and Mac.)

Wanderers in the Sky - I played through this today.  It is fairly short and sort of Kana ~ Little Sister-ish in that it deals with sadness.  A decent read with a decision tree to work though.  (Available for Windows, Linux and Mac.)

Summer, Cicadas, and the Girl - I also played this through today.  Another short one, this was actually a lot of fun.  You spend the story a little confused (at least I did) and instead of a decision tree, you have a fill in the blank.  Even after getting all 5 assists I guessed wrong twice (each wrong guess opens an assist).  Has a very sweet epilog.  (Only available for Windows and requires a Japanese environment.  Applocale worked fine for me on Windows XP.)

At Summer's End - The last game I played through today.  Again a short one but nice, sweet and gooey.  I liked this one a lot.   Three decision points, and a chance to look at the CG after the game is over.  (Available for Windows, Linux and Mac.)

None of these are adult oriented.

As I play others, I will post them here.  I have avoided giving any spoilers so that everyone can enjoy them.

Re: Free Visual Novels

I remembered I played one called Narcissu. I still have that one on my computer...

Hrm my interest temporarily waned a little for a while after I got frustrated with one visual novel because I disliked the protagonist razz I'll probably get back into it later, sometime.

After I get tired of dying in touhou razz

Re: Free Visual Novels

Red Shift was nicely done. I'll be checking out the others shortly.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins,
an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found.
